Not worth a purchase.

TMP was disappointing as a journalistic piece specifically because it contained nothing new. The reader is given a retelling of the same purported "facts" about Thailand and Thai women that are popular topics of conversation and stories on many of the less savory websites dedicated to Thailand. Sin Sot, Thai men's lack of character, sending money to the parents, loss of face, gold diggers, lying, cheating, manipulation...it's all in there.
It would appear that internet forums and websites were the primary source of information with most of the supporting details sounding like the jaded ramblings of [...] contributors.
Though they claimed to have conducted "hundreds of interviews," neither these nor the websites they used for research and occasionally alluded to were cited or referenced in the bibliography.
What most disturbed me about the book, and the reason I finally decided to publish a review about it, was the ubiquitous yet subtle disrespect towards Thai women present in their writing.
This is most blatantly demonstrated by the fact that in a book, which goes to great lengths to describe the motivations of Thai women in interracial relationships, does not bother to use any Thai women as sources for its material. Every story told and conclusion reached was based on second hand accounts of Westerners in the beer bars of Pattaya and Samui and websites such as [...].
It was also made quite clear that, in the eyes of the Ardins, all Thai women are for sale. This was a point made repeatedly and the authors made certain that the reader did not believe that only "bar girls" were selling themselves. Rather, they went out of their way to indict as many different types Thai women as possible.
While a feeble attempt was made near the end of the book to convince the reader that this was not the point they were making, the numerous accusations were very clear.
"Thai girls who look like ordinary Western girls -with jeans and tank tops- often work in the bars." p 22
"Thai girls' prime asset is their sexuality." p 75
"Many educated middle- and upper-class Thai women make a living from being a mistress..." p 92
"Most of the relationships between Western men and Thai women are based on financial transactions." p 166
"Almost all the young women from the villages travel to the South for work, and most of them participate in one way or another in commercial sex." p 182
At one point in the book the claim is even made that school girls are preparing themselves for an eventual sale to a rich white man. To be fair, this was presented as the claim of a Western teacher in Thailand, perhaps even gleaned from a popular web forum.
This book insults both Thai women and normal Western men who happen to be involved with them. What appeared at first glance to be potentially a new look at the Thai-Western relationship, turned out to be nothing more than yet another book perpetuating nasty stereotypes and reinforcing the mistaken notion that Thailand is nothing more than a tawdry, backwater brothel.

Eye Opener

A very poignant revelation of how disadvantaged women in Thailand and desperate men from western countries converge and use one another for financial and emotional reasons and never really seem to resolve anything except in very rare cases. An eye opener when it comes to the reality of the true motives and passions.

"Thailand-Men's Paradise?" by Annika & Annabella Arnin Farbin
When I GOOGLE something or go directly to Wikipedia I am usually searching for an answer. When I downloaded "Thailand-Men's Paradise?" into my Kimble I was looking for some fast and soft...(alright, I confess, maybe hard)...porn stuff. But, that is not what I got. Instead, my Kimble screen gave me many hours of what actually goes through many a young Thai woman's mind. No, Annika and her daughter did not limit themselves to looking into just the hearts of Thai ladies....they looked at the workings of Thai Ladyboys as well. But, before reaching that chapter on Katoeys they explored the world of bar girls and their male boy friends and husbands (Thai and farang).This book is a must for anyone wanting to experience 'this' life.
Though I have lived in Thailand for ten years and I have been coming here since 1982 "Thailand'-Men's Paradise?" kept me saying "Annika is so right"....and, "Wow, I never knew that, but, yes, it is so true".
I give it a BUY.
