6 Perry Mason Mysteries, by Erle Stanley Gardner
Erle Stanley Gardner was once "the World's Greatest Author" as his novels outsold the combined totals of his rivals. He and others formed "The Court of Last Resort" in the 1940s to investigate the wrongfully convicted. Gardner never put dates in his novels, but the monetary figures and backgrounds date these stories. Gardner warned of the dangers of mistaken eyewitness identification, drawing the wrong conclusions from circumstantial evidence, or prematurely accusing a suspect before all the evidence was gathered and evaluated. Some stories made the point that while ballistics can identify the gun that fired a bullet it cannot tell when it was fired (before or after the crime). "Perry Mason" advised his clients to never lie to the police, it was better to say nothing except to call for a lawyer. This is similar to the case of Sacco & Vanzetti (convicted of robbery and murder in spite of their alibis and the lack of guilty evidence). Many believe they were innocent but convicted as part of the political repression of the 1920s.
"The Case of the Half-Wakened Wife" (1945) begins when a man tried to give Jane Keller $500 on a back payment for an oil lease. She sold the property and refused the money. A bank officer says she needs a lawyer. Sister Martha takes Jane to see Perry Mason. Perry calls Scott Shelby (who has the oil lease) and goes to meet him. No deal is made. The meeting on the yacht presents the positions on the deal, but nothing results. Perry hears a woman scream and a shot fired, then a splash in the river. They find Scott Shelby has disappeared, and Marion Shelby has a pistol with one empty shell in it. No body was found. They call the Sheriff. Sergeant Dorset arrests Marion Shelby for murder. Perry instructs her how to answer questions. Perry visits Paul Drake to discuss the facts. Drake calls his men to investigate the disappearance of Scott Shelby. [Perry's client is freed at the end.]
"The Case of the Moth-Eaten Mink" (1952) begins when Perry Mason and Della Street dine out. A waitress ran out leaving her paycheck and her moth-eaten mink coat. The police enter because the waitress was hit by a car! The police question the last table that Dixie Dayton served. Perry notices something about one customer and asks Della to follow him out. Perry follows a clue found in the mink coat. Perry tries to identify a mystery visitor. Dixie left the hospital secretly. Paul Drake tells of further developments. The police found out about the mink coat. Mae Nolan, a waitress at Morris Alburg's restaurant, visits to tell Perry and Paul what she knows. Perry gets more information from Mae Nolan. Lt. Tragg visits to question Perry about the coat. Tragg tells about a murdered police officer: his missing pistol was found and linked to Dixie! This has become a very serious case. "The Case of the Stepdaughter's Secret" (1963) begins when Perry Mason and Della Street await a visit from wealthy industrialist Harlow Bancroft. He has a letter from a blackmailer, his secret past could embarrass him,. Perry offers advice, and a plan to foil the blackmailer. Paul Drake and his operatives will effect Perry's plan for the money. This plan works, but there is a glitch. More complications arise. Bancroft's step-daughter Rosena Andrews also has a secret that she wants kept hidden. One person has a connection to a blackmailer. A blackmailer meets Mrs. Bancroft on their yacht, a gun is fired, a body goes into the water. Now Perry has a difficult case on his hands. Is the advice on handling blackmail still valid? The police find the missing yacht and the body. The Bancrofts do not speak until their attorney is present. [Perry's client is freed at the end.]
"The Case of the Singing Skirt" (1959) is about the beauty contest racket. Beautiful girls win a free trip to Hollywood. Then they are discarded and stranded, forced to seek a living anyway they can. Ellen Robb consults Perry Mason to complain about her firing from a gambling casino after she refused to spy on the cards held by a customer. The small town of Rowena has a sleazy reputation. There was an alleged shortage where Ellen worked as the cashier. The owner of the gambling casino owns the justice of the peace, the chief of police, and has friends in high places too! Perry defends Ellen Robb against defamation of character. Mrs. Ellis shows up to complain about her husband's losses at gambling, and ask for a return of the money. Perry cites California's community property law to recover money lost at gambling. Perry explains how to date a gun to determine when a bullet was fired by it. Ellen found a pistol planted in her belongings and brought it to Perry. He inspected it, then returned a pistol to Ellen. [Perry's client is freed at the end.]
"The Case of the Buried Clock" (1943) begins in rural southern California. Vincent Blane, store owner and banker, has two daughters. One is married to Jake Hardisty, the other is seeing Harley Raymond. Jack Hardisty stole a huge sum of money from his father-in-law's bank. Adele Blane and Harley are at the cabin when Jack arrives; they leave. When Harley returns, he finds Jack's body in a bedroom. No murder weapon or money. The police investigate. Perry Mason is hired to defend Millicent, Jack's widow, who was seen near the cabin and has no alibi. Her revolver was found near the cabin. Was it the murder weapon? When the trial begins, the autopsy surgeon said scopolamine (a "truth serum") was found in Jake's body. The estimated time of death was between 7:30pm and 10:00pm. Can the age of a person be determined from a "spectacle lens"? Were the other people around at the time of the murder just passing by? Finding two revolvers complicates the case, as well as the buried alarm clock. [Perry's client is freed at the end.]
"The Case of the Counterfeit Eye" (1935) begins when Peter Brunold visits Perry Mason because his glass eye was stolen! Brunold keeps spares for when his eye is bloodshot. He suspects it will be planted to implicate him in a crime. Perry figures out a scheme to prevent this. Next Bertha McLane and her brother Harry visit Perry. Harry has embezzled money from Hartley Basset, who "makes all sorts of loans". Harry wants to return the money if Perry can arrange it. Perry advises Harry to straighten out his life. Perry meets Hartley Basset, learns of his character, and meets his dissatisfied wife. Sylvia Basset has trouble at home between Hartley and his son Dick. Hartley drove away after hitting Dick's secret wife Hazel Fenwick. Perry calls the police, then learns of a mysterious man with one eye. A search of the other rooms found Hartley Basset dead! The police found two guns. How could that be suicide? The police found a third gun carried by Basset. There is another complication with Dick's secret wife. Brunold is arrested for the murder.
