Caradoc the Black Hawk rescues novice nun Morgaine from a murderous band of cutthroats. Caradoc tries to return the beautiful young woman safely to her convent, but her enemies have burnt it to the ground, leaving her completely at Caradoc's mercy.

Caradoc believes that Morgaine is being used as a pawn in her neighboring lord Yestin's bid for power over Yns Draiocht. Morgaine's father Gawain is being held to ransom by Yestin's Viking allies in Dublin.
Morgaine is willing to trade herself for her father, but Caradoc refuses to allow her to make such a terrible bargain. He knows they will keep Morgaine a prisoner forever, and destroy all that she as a druid is sworn to protect.
Despite his being half-blind as a result of his deliberate maiming at the hands of rogue royal prince Cadwalader, Caradoc is determined to rescue Morgaine's father and remove Yestin's threat to the druid isle forever.
As he travels to Dublin to rescue her father, he finds himself falling in love with Morgaine. He dares not ever aim so high as to win her hand, but he will sacrifice anything to keep her safe and stop Cadwalader from overrunning all of northern Wales.
Morgaine is stunned at the depth of her feelings for the handsome but badly scarred Caradoc. She determines to trust him with her life and love, and teaches him how to use the powers she can sense within him to control the four elements. Only then can they defeat their enemies and give in to the raging passion they share every time they touch.

"Under cover of darkness tonight. I'll ready everything while you go back for more sleep."
"That's hardly fair," she protested. "I can help. Just tell me what to do."
Caradoc remained silent.
"Unless you want to be alone with your own thoughts."
"God, no," he exclaimed in alarm, recalling the last time he had allowed his unconscious thoughts free rein.
She laughed merrily. "It's all right, Caradoc. I don't mind, truly. It was lovely. Though I have to tell you in all honesty I have no idea how you can do it. I've met some pretty powerful mages in my day, but I've never felt or seen anything like that before."
"Good," he said gruffly, pulling her to his hard body for a kiss.
No, it was more than a kiss. It was a tasting, a testing, a tribute. An unspoken promise, a bond solemnly undertaken. And yet still more than that. It was also a reaching into the soul to draw it out even as Caradoc offered Morgaine his unconditionally.
Morgaine had no idea if it was the valley, the magical circle, or just Caradoc, or all three. Her body caught fire and passion flared even more forcefully than it had on the forest floor the night before. Every part of her ached to touch and be touched.
She breathed him in like the aroma of flowers, savored his tongue like fine wine. She ran her fingers through his thick silky ebony hair, heard the thunderous beat of his heart. His breathing invaded hers, in, out, in, out.
The age-old rhythm of their bodies rubbing together even through their thick clothing brought them close to the ultimate fulfillment. Each groaned into the other's mouth, trembling on the brink. Caradoc's knees buckled. He sat on the stone altar and lay back, tugging her onto his chest. She could feel his need vibrate through him as their hips pressed against each other's, cradling, a perfect fit.
It was the most incredible sensation he had ever experienced, and they hadn't even touched each other's bare flesh yet.

probably the best free book yet

This is book two in a series that has three books so far. I did not realize that until after I had read it, so it stands alone quite well. However, now that I know, I will read the other two. It was free at time that I downloaded it.
Plot: Morgaine is a powerful druid, descended directly from Merlin. Many people would like to use her for their own ends. When she finds herself in great danger from one of these people, Caradoc (the Black Hawk) comes to her rescue. Morgaine soon realizes that Caradoc is not the simple mercenary he seems. Not even Caradoc realizes that he too is a powerful druid. She soon realizes that he is the one destined to be her mate, but he has trouble accepting this. Never the less, he vows to keep her safe and help her rescue her father. As they travel together his powers become more and more evident, and they fall deeper in love.
The author did a good job of bringing not only the main characters to life, but also a whole host of secondary characters as well. The magical elements of the story were well written and did not take anything away from the romance between the characters. Although they were destined to be together, you still believe that they would have fallen in love without the magic.
If I could have given half stars I would have deducted half a star for one thing that bothered me. I think that the author belabored the wounded hero point just a bit too much. His fears about his own inability to "perform" were obviously proven groundless long before the character stops harping about it. But, it didn't bother me enough to deduct a whole star.

I enjoyed reading the whole series of adventures for these brothers. The adventures were believable and the intimacy enhanced the storyline.
