About the Author
Jill Homer grew up in Sandy, Utah, and graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in journalism in 2000. She began her career working in community weekly and daily newspapers. In 2005, she moved to Homer, Alaska, to pursue adventure in the Last Frontier. She never viewed herself as an athlete, but she was looking for a unique kind of outlet that provided both physical and psychological challenges. Endurance cycling fit that description. Two years of (mainly mis)adventures landed her in one of the most difficult endurance races in North America, a 350-mile winter traverse of Alaska wilderness called the Iditarod Trail Invitational. The unforgettable experience was the genesis of her first book, Ghost Trails: Journeys Through A Lifetime. Her second book, Be Brave, Be Strong: A Journey Across the Great Divide is a continuation of what she views as her ongoing challenge: To drink life by the gallon, every day. She currently works as a freelance writer and editor in Los Altos, California.

Great read!

This is a great read for anyone and highly recommended. I am not a cyclist, nor ultra sport athlete or anything remotely close to what Jill is... that being said, her writing style and ability to grab the reader and bring them into her story is amazing.

Sometimes reading this book you may start to drift into the realm of thinking this is fiction and have to pinch yourself back into reality and realize that all of this is based on her life and experiences.

This gal is nuts (in a good way)

Jill is an incredible writer, who is destined for greater things in the journalism world. Her style is such, you pick up the book (or view her blog) and realize hours and hours have passed. I'm sure this will be the first of many books. She works for the paper in Juneau, and was followed and picked up last year by NPR. Read the book, view her blog, and follow her adventures. You will never complain its too cold to ride your bike again!

I devoured this book in two nights,and could easily ahve read it in one, but wanted to give myself some time to absorb it. Easily one of the best books I've read in years and would highly recommend it.

The author writes with a realness and freshness that got me hooked, and it just makes you realise what anyone can achieve.

Maps and tables too blurry to use

Kindle edition: Maps and tables are reproduced too small and too blurry to use. The blurriness makes words illegible even with a magnifying glass: that is, words and numbers are not only too small, they are also blurred into completely unreadable spots of ink. This is a serious defect.
Also, Churchill quotes many letters, telegrams, speeches and so on. In the printed version, these quotes are separated from Churchill's regular text by whitespace. The Kindle edition whimsically starts a long quote in regular type, then prints subsequent paragraphs in italics, then returns to regular type when Churchill takes up the narrative again. The original Dalek story

The second televised Doctor Who story introduced one of the most important elements in the show's history: the Daleks, the most constant opponents of the Doctor through his many lives. So popular were they that this novel was published in 1964. Written by the show's original script editor, it is not a straight adaptation of the show it is based on.
Mr Whitaker starts the novel with a variant version of the first episode of the series, although Ian is not a teacher and Susan has a different surname (English instead of Foreman). This version is rather more atmospheric than the equivalent in the novelisation of An Unearthly Child. In fact, writing the book in the first person (narrated by Ian) is an excellent device in this book.
Moving on into the story proper, it is again not a simple adaptation of the televised story. While fairly faithful, some of the deviations (like the glass Dalek) add interest in a way that the show could not actually portray at the time. The Thal characters are fairly well outlined (given that they are quite flat in the original serial), and the descriptions of the planetary environs is also good.
Way back when, Doctor Who books included line drawing illustrations. I've never been impressed with these, but those in this book are among the best, and obviously based on stills from the original.
An excellent, if inaccurate, adaptation of an important story. A pity they aren't all this good.

About the Author
Sheldon M. Ross is a professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research at the University of Southern California. He received his Ph.D. in statistics at Stanford University in 1968. He has published many technical articles and textbooks in the areas of statistics and applied probability. Among his texts are A First Course in Probability, Introduction to Probability Models, Stochastic Processes, and Introductory Statistics. Professor Ross is the founding and continuing editor of the journal Probability in the Engineering and Informational Sciences. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and a recipient of the Humboldt US Senior Scientist Award.

An Introduction to Monte Carlo Simulation

"Simulation" by Sheldon Ross is a good book for introducing undergraduates to Monte Carlo simulation. I teach statistics to final year undergraduate students and I find that this book is at the perfect level for my students.

After providing a recap of the basics of probability theory, Ross defines what a random number and a pseudorandom number are and then details how these numbers can be used to generate random variates from discrete and continuous probability distributions. Ross discusses the most commonly used algorithms for generating such variates, including the Inverse Transformation Method, the Acceptance-Rejection Method and methods for generating normal random variates. Ross also discusses problem solving using a simulation approach; the analysis of simulated data; variance reduction techniques (including how to determine the number of simulations required in order to solve a problem); and Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods.

Ross's explanations of the various topics are simple to follow and include a large number of worked examples to illustrate the various points and formulae. A large number of exercises are also provided at the end of each chapter, although solutions are not given.

The focus of this book is entirely on Monte Carlo simulation methods and Ross does not touch on any of the more sophisticated methods that have now superseded Monte Carlo methods (such as Latin Hypercube sampling), which may make this book a bit too simplistic for more advanced students (I am also writing a PhD in statistics, that involves the use of simulation techniques, and I found this book to be too basic to be helpful for that). However, for statistics students who are taking their first course in simulation, this book is perfectly pitched.

Not a textbook, at best reference material.

I'm currently an undergraduate studying introductory simulation, and this book has not been effective in conveying the necessary information.

This textbook (if it can even be called one) is at best reference material. Examples are not clearly explained or worked out, i.e. methods for simulating a process are not fully explained and the actual estimator is never written down.

The material is just too dense and an entire semester detailing various simulation techniques was covered in the span on 20-30 pages. Needless to say, this book can only be used as reference material for lectures and cannot be relied on for learning.
