Helpful reflections of Pastoral Ministry today

Armstrong and his thirteen contributors endeavored to produce a book designed to enumerate the problems of modern pastoral ministry. Each of the fourteen writers dealt with a different issue in the practice of pastoral ministry which he considers broken. In so doing, they hoped to provide what each of them views as a necessary corrective to restore pastoral ministry to its biblical and historical roots. Some of the contributors provide helpful reflections. Others used their respective missives as an opportunity to ride gallantly upon their theological hobbyhorses intending to find brokenness where perhaps none exists, or at least not to the extent they believe exists.

Helpful Reflections

Joel Beeke's chapter, "The Utter Necessity of a Godly Life," gives a pointed reminder to pastors that their lives must be lived above reproach. Much of the chapter seems elementary at its best and patronizing at its worst; but it does serve as a not-so-subtle rebuke to the minister whose life reflects more of this world than of the next world. Beeke reminds pastors that their congregations can never rise above the depth of their own spirituality. Pastors must always be one step ahead in the never-ending quest for godliness. It is easy for the busy pastor to substitute the duties of the job for devotion to the Savior, such as using sermon preparation as a substitute for devotional meditation. I have fallen into this trap, especially while under the time pressures common to many bi-vocational pastors. Now as a "fully supported," pastor, I realize that the giftedness of my ministry must be authenticated by the fruitfulness of my character and conduct borne out of a passionate love relationship with Jesus. My people will never see Jesus reflected in my life if I neglect spending time in the Tent of Meeting.

Thomas Smith's chapter entitled, "Keeping the Main Thing the Main Thing," is a wonderful polemic for the centrality of Christ in preaching. Just as the apostolic kerygma maintained the centrality of Christ and the cross, all modern preaching must strive to bring people to Christ. Without Jesus, there is no good news. Without the preaching of the cross, there is no hope for spiritual health and wholeness. All our exegesis must pass through a Christological filter to ensure sound hermeneutics. The apex of Christian preaching must remain the glory of God through the exaltation of Christ.

Jerry Marcellino deals with the important issue of the glory of God in worship. One must not design a worship services for the pleasure of the people. Worship belongs to God. The object of worship is never the feelings of the worshipper, but the exaltation of the One worshipped. Worship must reflect God's grandeur, his transcendence, and his mystery. While many of Marcellion's points regarding worship are well taken, his treatment of what constitutes acceptable worship music lacks the necessary specificity to be helpful and is sufficiently vague to be harmful. While some worship music seems to transcend time and culture, every generation must be free to offer praise and adoration in the vernacular of its musical culture. Much of the denigration directed at contemporary praise and worship music reflects the aesthetic values of the detractors rather than specific biblical injunctions. Modern day Luthers and Calvins must be allowed to transform the popular music of the day into melodious praise meaningful to the contemporary worshipper. Let history sort out what works and what does not work.

A Welcomed Return to an Older View of the Ministry

Pastors in America are facing a cascade of pressures that are unique to this generation and time. They rise of postmodernism in America has moved the nation past a time when church attendance was fashionable and expected. False doctrine is promulgated through the medium of Christian television and through best-selling books. In the midst of this religious milieu, some churches have abandoned a confidence in the power of God’s word and turned to a model of ministry that is driven either by entertainment or therapy. The rapid social change and expectations of church members have left pastors looking for the next new model or fad to try to grow their churches and satisfy the people in the pews.

The editor and contributors to Reforming Pastoral Ministry: Challenges for Ministry in Postmodern Times want to call pastors away from this kind of schizophrenic approach to ministry and root them in a practice of ministry that finds its genesis in Bible. They argue that this is the type of approach to pastoral ministry that won the day during the time of the Reformation and that gives us a model for ministry that is successful in the eyes of God.

John Armstrong, who edited the volume, articulates his vision for this work in the introduction. He says that as he contemplated the various works that were being written for pastors in this era, he returned more and more to the work of Richard Baxter in The Reformed Pastor. (18) By reformed pastor, Baxter was not referring to a pastor who merely held to Reformed theology. He was talking about a man whose pastoral work was reforming the local church. This is the type of model that Armstrong and the contributors seek to advance in this book.

While there are fourteen different authors who appear to write on different subjects, several clear themes develop in the book. The opening chapter, written by the editor, sets forth the Reformation principle of Semper Reformanda and argues that the true church and true minister will always be reforming themselves according to the word of God. The next two chapters set forth how this principle applies to the pastor’s overall conception of the ministry. Chapters 4 through 6 focus on restoring Christ-centered biblical exposition to the heart of the church. The final eight chapters deal with various aspects of church life. In each of the articles, a clear commitment to not just the truthfulness of Scripture, but the authority of Scripture in the life and ministry of the pastor come through clearly. The contributors show how Scripture should be applied to forgotten areas of pastoral ministry as well as areas that pastors have surrendered to other “professionals.”

The model advocated in Reforming Pastoral Ministry could be considered a more historic approach to the ministry. In many ways, it reads like a book on pastoral ministry that would have been written during the ministry of the Puritans. The contributors’ overall approach to ministry is driven by a commitment to the authority of the word of God in the church. They seek to work out approaches to every aspect of pastoral ministry in light of the clear teaching of Scripture. As an example, Joseph Flatt works out a biblical approach to church discipline. He explains the reasons that biblical pastors should practice church discipline and gives the biblical guidelines for its practice. From his exposition of Scriptural passages dealing with church discipline, he then gives practical advise to pastors about how a commitment to church discipline should look in a church today.

The only improvement needed in Reforming Pastoral Ministry is a look at how this approach to pastoral ministry would look on a day to day basis. In light of the pressures that pastors face to do good things instead of the most important things, it would be helpful for the contributors to talk about the pastor’s schedule. While there is not a biblical discussion of the pastor’s schedule per se, it would be beneficial to hear from an experienced minister who has organized his life so that he could be effective at leading a reforming ministry.

Reforming Pastoral Ministry will make an impact on the heart of the pastor. Joel Beeke, in his chapter on "The Utter Necessity of a Godly Life," argues that the pastor’s greatest business is to know God and live a life that reflects His character. The pastor cannot lead people to a place that he has not been himself. Therefore, he must labor to know God through daily reading and meditation on Scripture and through spending much time before God in prayer. Kent Hughes expands on this in his chapter when he says that ‘sermon preparation is twenty hours of prayer.” (88) Nothing the pastor can be divorced from living for the glory of God and knowing God personally.

Pastors will be also challenged by the emphasis in this work on a personal pastoral ministry. Jim Elliff points to the words of Richard Baxter, “You may study long, but preach to little purpose, unless you have a pastoral ministry.” This flies in the face of much work on the ministry in our day which speaks of the people in our churches as if they are distractions from what we have been called to do. Elliff's chapter challenges pastors to know the people that they lead and to have personal, pastoral relationships with them. Related to this a trend that I have noticed in the last several years. Most of the books written on the ministry recently are written by men who pastor large churches. Pastors of small churches read these books and begin to pastor their smaller churches as if they are larger churches. This is neither right nor wise. Pastors of smaller churches have no excuse for not knowing and connecting with every person who is a member of the church they pastor. They can and should enlist their elders in this process, and create a scalable model as they grow to ensure that every person in the church has a connection to one of the pastoral leaders.

Reforming Pastoral Ministry is a welcome work in the current milieu of works on pastoral ministry. The contributors superbly marry biblical insight with practical wisdom. The result is a work that will be an encouragement, challenge, and help to any man in the pastoral ministry.

Another Toxic Mother

Of the Farm by John Updike should be read along with Portnoy's Complaint by Philip Roth. They both portray toxic mothers but from archly different perspectives. And they are almost contemporaneous works from the mid-1960s. Unlike Portnoy's Complaint no hint of humor lightens Updike's novel, nor is the mood anything but tense, strained, and difficult--just like much of life. But a little humor to help keep one's perspective wouldn't hurt, would it?

I would call Of the Farm "minimalist fiction." It is short and there is no action to speak of; no plot except what swirls underground as it were, no violence, no sex, nothing to keep the readers attention except the intricate portrayal of human relationships in the family, in this case a "blended" one--and, of course, Updike's fine writing, which at times gets a bit overdone with excessive and flowery metaphors that are only distracting and draw attention to the author rather than illuminating the characters or story. "See how clever I am and how fine I can turn a phrase. Bet you can't write this good. (I mean "well." Sorry.)"

Updike explores many issues of 1960s America in a compressed way--such issues as divorce with children, remarriage with children, aging, encroaching suburbanization, the slow disappearance of rural life in the Northeast, urban v. rural life. Of course, central to all are the relations between mother and son. Heck, these issues are still very much in the air today.

Of the Farm is full of nostalgia for something slipping away and maybe lost. There is also a wonderful mini-portrait/characterization of a precocious eleven year old boy. I think that was my favorite aspect of the novel.

The editorial review praise for Of the Farm seems quite overblown to me. If they say that stuff about Of the Farm, what would they say about a really good novel? Is this some sort of "praise inflation"?

An Intricate and Dramatic Story About Relationships

Of The Farm details the complex relationship between a son in his mid-thirties and his elderly mother. The son brings his new wife and her son from a previous marriage to his mother's remote farm, and it's obvious from the beginning that the mother and the wife are not going to get along.

Though a brief novel, Updike delivers an intricate and dramatic story peeling away the complicated layers that make up relationships. Throughout the book, the man is constantly on alert, hoping to defuse any arguments between the women in his life, but he refuses to stand up to his mother nor does he seem totally invested in being committed to his wife.

In fact, the man is an incredibly interesting character because he is so flawed, so monumentally incapable of mediating the warring women in a healthy manner, that he almost leaps off the page. Surely he'll remind you of someone you know ... perhaps even yourself. The women were also expertly written, something that doesn't always happen with a male author. I found the mother and wife realistic, respectable, and equally as flawed as the main character.

Though lacking any real physical action, Updike's study of mothers and sons and husbands and wives is wickedly enticing and, as always, written very well.

A distillation--good and bad--of Updike

In OF THE FARM, Updike scrutinizes the plight of Joey Robinson, a 35 year-old New Yorker, as he returns to the farm where he lived his adolescence and visits his difficult mother. Joey is with Peggy, his second wife, and her precocious eleven year-old son, who uses such words as "uncanny" and "perhaps". On this visit, Joey will step in for his father, who died the summer before, and mow the fields. But the point of the visit is to enable Mary, Joey's mother, to get to know Peggy, who she has met only once before. As they pull up to the farmhouse for their visit, Joey tells Peggy: "I don't expect you and she to get along."

The Robinsons are not nice people. Joey imagines himself to be a peacemaker, a youthful role he adopted to protect his complaisant father from his acerbic mother. But he does, in fact, have a mean streak, not unlike Mom, and does, sometimes, say harsh things to Peggy or animate her insecurities. Like his mother, Joey is also ruthless within his family. In this case, he finds guilty liberation in his divorce and remarriage while Mary had her superior and selfish reasons--mostly, she wanted full control over her son--when she forced her family to move to the isolated farm. The Robinsons, by the way, share nasty confidences about Peggy after she has gone to bed. Mary calls her stupid and common and Joey does not disagree. And without much pushing from Mary, Joey agrees that he misses his three children and that the second marriage was a mistake. But, he seems to be saying, it was HIS mistake. So accept it.

OF THE FARM exhibits many of Updike's maddening literary qualities. There is, for example, the wooden dialogue, with characters attaining near doctoral and implausible nuance. There are also the sudden and fraught exchanges--those "where did that come from?" moments--that Updike needs to clarify after they have occurred. There's the guilt and the lame vulgarity. And there are the pages when the novel stops as Updike describes the appearance of, say, raindrops sliding down a windowpane. Yet despite these flaws, Updike is sometimes able to write THE GREAT PERORATION, which somehow makes a virtue of his flaws, tucking every irksome aspect of his narrative into some great overarching theme that actually justifies his mistakes and his rush to write yet another book.

So, does OF THE FARM have TGP? IMHO, the answer is "not quite". In this case, the vehicle for Updike's peroration is a sermon delivered by a young but rising country minister. This explores what a man can receive from a woman and endows infidelity and divorce --at least in Joey's mind--with tragic nobility. But the peroration omits any justification for the nastiness, which is everywhere in this book.

Written in an engaging, almost chatty style, Neanderthal is a good introduction to our understanding of Neanderthal man as of the date of publication (2000). Author Jordan shows the reader how Neanderthal man fits into the long evolution of modern man. He describes the environment of Neanderthal man, the state of his technology, and speculates on his way of life. He goes on to place Neanderthal man on the spectrum of evolution, describing hominid development before and after Neanderthal man. Jordan reminds us that Neanderthal man existed for over 100,000 years, whereas we have only been around for about a quarter of that time period!

Neanderthal has well over one hundred black and white illustrations and about two dozen color plates. I would have appreciated some maps to illustrate the many sites in which remains were found. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in early hominid and human development. It looks like it's not available in print right now, but there appears to be a Kindle edition available.

Excellent History of Racism

Fredrickson defines racism as a reasoned theory that posits the "innate and permanent inferiority of nonwhites" (xvii). He argues that racism in some form has plagued American thought throughout the nation's history, and in this volume he traces the different forms it has taken in the period from 1817 to 1914. He thus arranges his study chronologically, progressing methodically through the nineteenth century. Fredrickson begins by showing that the underlying arguments for the colonization movements were based on the recognition of white prejudice in American society. Colonizationitsts argued that black people would never have the opportunity to integrate into the society because of deeply ingrained racial prejudices. The abolitionists answered this position by arguing that whites should be able to overcome their prejudice and achieve the ideal of Christian brotherhood. Then, as more abolitionists based their attack on moral grounds, proponents of slavery searched for ideological justification for their position and argued for the innate racial inequality and permanent inferiority of the black slaves. From this emerged a Herrenvolk democracy in which the creation of a permanent underclass (slaves in this case) protected the radical equality of the higher class (whites). Scientific theories emerge in the 1840s and 1850s to support the position of the innate inferiority of the slaves and gave rise to the theory of polygenesis which holds that only whites descended from Adam, while God created blacks as an inferior species. Romantic racialism also emerged at the same time moving focus from seeming social and intellectual deficiencies of black people and emphasizing their lightheartedness and willingness to serve, qualities of natural Christians. This position finds its fullest expression in Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin.
Thus, in the 1860s the more conservative romantic racialists pushed again for colonization, arguing that these "natural Christians" could only flourish back in their native Africa. The ideal of white America had again become a racially homogeneous society. Frederickson argues that Reconstruction was therefore merely a political tool because the attitudes of racial superiority prevailed among whites. This renewed racial superiority then gave rise to a sense of paternalism in the period from 1877 to 1890. At the end of the nineteenth century Darwinian thinking came together with racial superiority to spawn the idea that black people, as the weaker race would be wiped out in this country. Finally, he concludes with a chapter on the accommodation that flows from progressivism which manifests itself as a return to a paternalism and a sense of treating black people with a modicum of decency as the "white man's burden."
Frederickson gives flesh to the above sketch of this argument in his well-documented and carefully nuanced book. The work is an excellent intellectual history of the phenomenon of racism in the United States.

Seminal work on American race history

George Fredrickson's book, "The Black Image in the White Mind," is an intellectual history dealing with the rise of formalized racial ideologies in nineteenth century America. The author argues that these anti-black intellectual concepts, far from forming in a vacuum, arose in concert with other significant trends occurring in the American political, economic, and social arena. Moreover, Fredrickson points out the significant role the American North, an area not usually associated with overt racism, played in this emotionally charged discourse. Many of the ideas articulated in the North reinforced as often as they countered the extremely hostile invective circulating in the South. Most importantly, "The Black Image in the White Mind" stresses the underlying themes that all of these theories, regardless of northern or southern orientation, shared between 1817 and 1914: the author convincingly avers that every racial hypothesis assumed the idea of black inferiority, that blacks differed significantly from whites "physically, intellectually, and temperamentally," that animosity between whites and blacks was inevitable, saw miscegenation as a sublime evil, and viewed a biracial society as an impossibility best remedied by the outright removal of African-Americans from United States territory or through various forms of subordination to the dominant white society. It is not surprising this book is still a standard assignment in graduate seminars about race history.
Fredrickson begins his analysis with the emergence of the colonization movement in the 1820s and 1830s and concludes with the plight of the American black under the Progressive movement of the early twentieth century. Along the way, the author discusses in detail various racial ideas: scientific racism, romantic racialism, recurring incarnations of Southern white paternalism, white nationalism, Negrophobia, and Accommodationist racism. In the American South, Fredrickson argues that a major tenet of racialist thought was Herrenvolk democracy, or a type of political theory that gave the dominant white population in the South all the fruits of democracy while denying blacks equivalent rights. Herrenvolk democracy informed much of the racial thought in this region during the nineteenth century because it created a hierarchical biracial system justified by slavery and later segregation systems. "The Black Image in the White Mind" proves that white racist thought in the nineteenth century was never a constant, monolithic ideology but a set of basic assumptions capable of adjusting to changing economic, political, or religious circumstances in the larger society. Just when one branch of racialist thought died down, another sprang up in an entirely different place and time with just as much virulence as the previous manifestation.
Perhaps the most compelling argument in Fredrickson's book is his formulation of romantic racialism. This idea, which posited that blacks were docile, childlike creatures whose attributes allowed them to attain a level of Christianity unavailable to "naturally aggressive" Caucasians, had great appeal among abolitionists in the North who believed slavery was wrong on religious grounds. Moreover, romantic racialism arose as a response to emerging ideas about perceived Anglo-Saxon superiority and the need for a homogeneous white nation. Fredrickson brilliantly develops this idea primarily through a literary analysis of Harriet Beecher Stowe's novels "Uncle Tom's Cabin" and "Dred." The articulation of romantic racialism explodes any lingering myths regarding abolitionists as rock ribbed anti-racists because it shows that these moral crusaders still argued for forcible removal of blacks from American territory.

Fredrickson addresses what is arguably his book's most serious problem in a new introduction to the 1987 reprint. He confesses that he focused more on what white intellectuals thought about blacks than what blacks said or did about their own situation in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Admittedly, the title of the book should blunt some criticism directed towards the author on this point: a title like "The Black Image in the White Mind" leaves little doubt as to what viewpoint the author will take. Still, the author does leave significant gaps in certain places of his book that beg for elaboration. For example, at one point the author refers to a correspondence between Salmon P. Chase and black writer and intellectual Frederick Douglass, a correspondence revealing in succinct detail what Chase thought about racial separation. Surely, Douglass responded to Chase's arguments in some way, but what that response might have been does not appear in the book.

More problematic is the section on Southern Negrophobia, where the author spends a great amount of time discussing how intellectuals in the South at the turn of the century began arguing that the black was a subhuman beast whose greatest social accomplishments consisted of crimes against whites, specifically white women. Was there an enormous explosion in violent crime at this time in this region? If so, what underlying factors contributed to an expansion of crime in the South? The author's analysis of Negrophobia fails to provide any concrete data about the number of violent offenses in the South. Ultimately, Fredrickson resorts to psychohistory to explain the possible reasons behind Negrophobia, arguing that this scurrilous from of racial hatred arose from "a projection of unacknowledged guilt feelings derived from their [white southerners] own brutality towards blacks." Perhaps this claim does have some merit, but Fredrickson cites no sources to back up this particular argument. By looking at Negrophobia relying solely on the sources, Fredrickson might have discovered more relevant reasons for why specific racial ideologies arose when they did. As it stands now, "The Black Image in the White Mind" offers an intriguing, if incomplete, analysis of American intellectual racism.
